When you take time to clean your house you want to make sure that the areas that you are cleaning are germ free. There are really three types of cleaning processes best suited in different instances. Knowing exactly what these cleaning objectives are and what each one does can help you decide which one you need to utilize and help you realize what you have been doing in the past (that may or may not have been ideal)!
Cleaning
Cleaning is what is done most often to clothes, counters, floors and just about anything else around your home. What it means is that you are using a cleaner such as soap and physically washing away the dirt and germs from the surface. Usually you use a wash cloth or a sponge to scrub away and water to rinse it off. Cleaning does not kill the germs but it lifts them off the surface. It also means that not all the germs are killed or removed but it means that they are reduced significantly and are therefore less likely to cause illness or infection.
Disinfecting
This process is where you use a chemical to treat a surface. The area you are treating is usually one where germs may be congregating and you use a chemical that has a compound that can kill off the germs that cause illness and infection. The type of chemical cleaner that is used will have the allocated amount of disinfectant in it, depending on the grade. This process is a better way to remove germs, but it also means that the area is not scrubbed; so if there is a stain or spill it will disappear.
Sanitizing
This is a process that either uses chemical or cleaning to accomplish it. It is when you are reducing almost all of the bacteria on a surface but on the downside; not all germs are attacked. This process is usually not good for removing viruses that may be lingering on the surface but it is a better option than cleaning when you are wanting to have an area sterilized.
